Of Doormats and Doorstops

theawfultruth051
Do you think I’m a doormat
‘Cause I’m a Christian,
‘Cause I don’t swear and curse
And berate you when I’m angry?

Do you think I’m a doormat
‘Cause I’ll give you a hand up
Than a slap in the face
For the one that you gave me?

Do you think I’m a doormat
‘Cause I don’t put you down
To make myself look good
And steal all the glory?

No, I’m not a doormat

A doorstop’s more like it
To let in the Spirit
To show you what grace is
‘Cause I have received it.

But give me a minute
And I’ll do the wrong thing
Like that old black cat
Doin’ what I shouldn’t.

So a doorstop I may be
But I’m not yet perfect
I’m just in the household
Of the One who has bought me.

You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

    1. Appreciate your comment. There’s always the danger of sounding too glib in “free verse” about the Holy Spirit’s presence in us. But as difficult as it is to communicate it with reverence and humility, it is not as difficult as comprehending the immensity of the grace we have been given in Christ. Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Sometimes a word strikes a chord ..’door stop’ did that for me; A double reminder not only to keep the door open … but also not to shut it by my actions (black cat temper) .
Soli Deo Gloria … the last stanza of my school anthem (tho we sang it in English)!

    1. The roundabout way in which these words came together would take all the “poetry” out of it but, hearing you, makes me magnify our God all the more who takes broken rhymes and meters and makes them speak.

I hope you write a post on that school anthem. I would be interested! 🙂
