My Name

Strange to my own ears
This voice that shies
From the syllables – two –
Awkward, gangly, standing unspeakably
Balanced on my tongue

Then suddenly spilt like milk
From an infant’s lips
Tender craving for warmth
Shivering in the air
Between the sightless suns of yesterday’s

Voices calling, murmuring, mocking, uttered
Sly positionings of familiar syllables –two –
That name, my name, not-name
Plummeting sound signifying nothing
Lost forgotten over the channels of the sea

Then dove-descending, Spirit-brooding awakening
Glorious sudden trumpet-blast of birth
Soaring high golden, no more orphan sounds –
Two – sung love, sung joy, sung dance
In eternal embrace with You
Savior God.

The LORD your God is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save;

he will rejoice over you with gladness;

he will quiet you by his love;

he will exult over you with loud singing.

(Zephaniah 3:17)
