Here is a new chapter in your life, you say,
But can you read my mind: I’m old,
new chapters are for the young
and I have been young too long:
Now I want to rest where the pages
lie open to places where you linger,
not propped between finger and thumb
ready to be flicked over from one scene
to the next: I tell you I just want to rest
not rush to and fro like I have somewhere to go
that will make it all worthwhile
and yet: The chapters run on capricious or apace
and I, ever conscious the day will come,
the final page in the wrinkled hand of time,
longing the last words inscribed will be
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant”:
For after that prize I will run on in new chapter,
verse, and psalm to gain the rest that comes
from the Author’s pen alone.
Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
2 Corinthians 5:6-10
So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
I love this. It speaks so clearly from one having lived a long life and looking back with a writer’s perspective. I especially love the line, “the final page in the wrinkled hand of time.”

We do have this dual vision as Christians and writers, don’t we, that of being written while writing down the story of our lives? In a similar way, the line you mention makes me wonder if the one who is reading and being read are not the same.

Lovely poem. Those “last words inscribed” are something we should all aspire to.

Thank you, Mr. D. Those words spoken by the King of kings and Lord of lords (cue the Hallelujah chorus!) not only crown the books of our lives but inscribe us into the Book of Life (Rev. 20).
