In the early morning hours a cock crows and I weep:
In the commons where shepherds kept watch one night
Over pastured lambs, born for execution
On an altar streaming with sin-laden blood;
That night when the heavens lit with glory round
As seraphim sang to ragged blokes,
Who gaped in wonder, then hurrying to see
The King born to common folk, Messiah,
The Lamb to be slain, Emmanuel, betrayed by man,
Born to set the world on fire yet sets men free:
That day that dawned one endless morn
On an empty grave and me.
Hebrews 9:26
But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
I like the line “as seraphim sang to ragged blokes”… The word choice of “blokes” is a bit surprising but in a good way as it really brings out the theme of commonness.
