Something haunting for the autumnal season; also a humorous one involving cuddly kittens, here.

Genre: Poetry
Word Count: 100
Memory’s Brew
Two shakers and ketchup
A pinch of salt, a dash of pepper
Dollop of sauce, a half mug of beer
Ice water for awakening
The dead will appear
The wine left in a glass
Holds a hint and a promise
Your laughter, “hold the pickle!”
Still haunts something wicked
Like you’ll never disappear
I will not cry when you come
Shed no tear as you sit down
But I will wonder anew
As my undead love for you
Refashions and reappears
Have I concocted a spell
Unearthed memories
Conjured a ghost?
Appearances deceive
In this deli, you live

Good to have an audio. I think it enhances the poetry for the speaker/ poet and the listener. I may do some of that.

Thanks and I encourage you to do it. It’s a lot of fun and helps a writer “hear” experientially what she might otherwise miss improving editorially.

Memories return sometimes in familiar places. I like how they returned in your poem in the deli along with the reappearing love.

The sing-song melody of your voice really enhances the poem! You know how you want the words emphasized. Even though some rhyme, it is the way you express them or how long you hold the word that gives it a special depth. Thanks for this!

This is so good, Dora. Eventually all that is left of us are memories if we’re lucky enough to have someone who remembers. If they are loving memories, the pain of loss lessens a bit.

Absolutely feel the same way, and that’s what I was trying to get across, albeit in a somewhat macabre way. Thanks, Gabi.

I liked the poetry and wondered at the underlying bitterness, a feeling of revenge budding.

I was definitely going for strong emotions, more nostalgic than bitter, but the sense of something “brewing” I did mean to imply. Thank you, James.

Dear Dora,
If you’re a ghost, a deli is a great place to haunt. Wonderfully written and read.

Dear Rochelle,
Thank you so much. You’re very kind and I agree: a deli rather than a musty old mansion for sure!

Yikes, those are very everyday ingredients for such a spell. I wonder how many people have done it by accident? 😮
I’m hoping everything is just bringing back memories 🙂

Bat’s wings are in short supply at a NY deli I guess! 😀I think you’re right, it’s memories that are reappearing.

I find this very sad as your character longs for the love they lost and, whether it’s a serious attempt at a magical concoction or not, long for their reappearing. So much emotion and very well done!
